COMPUTERISED COGNITIVE THERAPIES COME TO OLDHAM

Mental health charity Self Help Services has just launched its seventh computerised cognitive therapy service, this time extending to people living in the Borough of Oldham.

The Beating the Blues course is a computerised cognitive behavioural therapy designed to help people beat symptoms of anxiety and depression over eight weekly one-hour sessions. In Oldham Self Help Services is offering two cCBT courses: Beating the Blues – which is recommended by NICE for the treatment of mild to moderate depression and Fear Fighter, which is recommended by NICE in the treatment of panic and phobia.

Recently Self Help Services celebrated its Hulme based computerised cognitive behavioural therapy service reaching its 1000th referral in just two years of operation.

Self Help Services launched the service at the Zion Centre in Hulme in February 2007. And in just six months it had proved so popular, the charity launched similar servicesin Salford and East Manchester.

cCBT manager for Self Help Services Nick Seccombe said: “The service at the Zion Centre was popular from the very start. Previously, people with anxiety and depression would be referred by their GP for one to one therapy with a counsellor. But invariably this would mean being put on a waiting list.

He added: “The cCBT services have been very well used across Manchester, Trafford, Stockport and Salford. We're delighted to received NHS Oldham funding to offer the course to the people of Oldham.”

Patients can be referred or refer themselves to Self Help Services’ cCBT service, as each individual is assessed by a SHS member of staff before starting the sessions.
